Vacuum Cleaners With Water Filters Are Ideal For Those Who Suffer From Allergies

Vacuum cleaners with water filters are an innovative idea, but what exactly is their appeal? How is the water used for vacuuming, and why do manufacturers of vacuum cleaners that use water for filtration claim that the water makes their machines superior?

It all started back in the 1930s with a company called Rexair. Rexair designed the first bag-less vacuum cleaner in 1929, and seven years later they incorporated water into the design of their bag-less canister vacuum cleaner.

The logic behind this innovation was expressed by a new slogan, “Wet Dust Can’t Fly”. Water was used to trap dust that was sucked up by the machine, preventing it from being blown back into the air and settling back onto floors and furniture.

Because the Rexair cleaner helped eliminate airborne dust particles, it was beneficial for allergy and hayfever sufferers. It was soon recognized by the medical community, who hailed it as a breakthrough product.

In 1955 the Rexair cleaner was redesigned under a new name – the Rainbow . The Rainbow was the pioneer in vacuum cleaners with water filters, but in recent years several others have emerged on the market, some under new names, and some manufactured by well-known brands such as Shark and Dyson.

Vacuum cleaners with water filters work by using a canister of water as a filter. The air containing dirt is passed through the water reservoir as the vacuum is run. The exhaust of the vacuum is nothing but fresh clean air, without the residual dust that you would get with a traditional bag-style vacuum cleaner.

Like most bag-less vacuum cleaners, vacuum cleaners with water filters are equipped with HEPA filters to maximize filtration. People who vacuum with these types of vacuum cleaners usually say that there is a noticeable difference in how the air smells in their homes, and people with allergies find that it helps considerably.

Rainbow offers another rather pleasant accessory with their water filtered vacuum cleaners. You can choose from an assortment of fresh scents that can be added to the water reservoir to add a delightful aroma to the air as you clean. Scents such as these could be used with other brands of water vacuums as well, since the basic design is pretty much the same for all of them.

There are however a few disadvantages to this type of vacuum cleaner . They tend to be heavier than conventional vacuum cleaners because of the water, and for the same reason they are bulkier as well. They require more storage space than some of the more streamlined and lightweight vacuum cleaners. Emptying them can also be a chore because of the weight of the water and the fact that they need to be cleaned after each use.

Emptying a reservoir full of muddy water and then rinsing the canister clean afterwards is not everybody’s idea of everyday housecleaning.

However, for those who suffer from allergies, eliminating troublesome dust and pollen from the air of their homes may be worth just a little bit of convenience.
